This sense of mystery has popularized caves in stories and myths worldwide and is featured in many films and other media.

It can be fun to imagine what mysteries a cave might hold, and a great way to explore the possibilities is to learn how to draw a cave.

This guide that you will use will show you how to do just that! We hope you enjoy working on this step-by-step guide to drawing a cave.

How to Draw A Cave

Step 1

In this first part of our guide to drawing a cave guide, we will draw some rocks and boulders that makeup part of the cave wall.

First, we’ll draw a base for the cave to sit on by creating a slightly wavy horizontal line.

Next, we’ll use some rounded lines to create the large boulder shapes stacked on top of each other on the left side of this line. Once you look like our reference image, you can move on to step 2!

Step 2

With these boulders drawn at the base, we can now start drawing the entrance to the cave itself.

To do this, we’ll draw more wavy, irregular lines from the boulder shapes you drew in the first step.

Then you can add more rounded shapes on the side of the cave entrance.

We’ll continue to draw the mouth in the next few steps, so let’s move on.

Step 3

In this part of our guide to drawing a cave guide, we will draw the top of the cave entrance.

We will make it similar to how you started drawing the cave entrance in the last step, but there will be some differences.

Mainly, while the width of the mouth was quite thin on the left side, it will be a bit thicker on top. Otherwise, use some rougher lines for the rock opening.

Step 4

Your drawing in the cave is now taking shape! We will continue to add to the cave entrance in this fourth phase.

We will continue the trend of the top part of the cave as this right side will also be quite thick. You will again use the same irregular lines you always used for this part.

Once this side of the cave is drawn, we can complete the final details in the next part.

Step 5

In this fifth phase of our guide on drawing a cave, we will finish the final details and elements.

You can also add some details and additions of your own! Before we do that, however, let’s finish the details first.

First, we will make the outer entrance of the cave nice and rocky by adding some lines inside the outline.

Next, we draw more curved lines in the cave hole to indicate that it has some depth. Then you can draw some jagged horizontal lines near the top of the cave to look like the treetops in the background.

Finally, we’ll finish by drawing some lines and rocks in the ground in front of the cave. That completes the details in this guide, but you don’t have to stop there!

You can add many cool things to the drawing to personalize it. One of the fun ways to do this would be to show what you think the cave might contain.

It could be a bear or a wild animal like we said before, but you could also draw a scary troll or some cavemen!

Step 6

You have now reached the sixth and final step of your cave drawing, and this is the step where we will finish the drawing with some colours. This is a part where you can get inventive and see what you can arrive up with.

In our reference image, we have shown you one way to do this.

We used a wide range of colours, with blue for the sky, green for the trees, brown for the cave and some dark yellows for the ground.

You can choose these shades too, but feel free to change them and use your favourite colours!

You might also be experimenting with some cool art mediums, and you have tons of options for colours and art tools that you could use.

Make sure you have fun and get creative with it, and we can’t wait to see you colour this picture!
